Cardinal Richelieu and his power-hungry entourage seek to take control of pre-Renaissance France, but need to destroy Father Grandier - the priest who commands the fortified town that prevents Richelieu from exerting total control. Richelieu seeks to destroy the priest by setting him up as a warlock in control of a devil-possessed nunnery where the Mother Superior is sexually obsessed by Father Grandier. A mad witchfinder is brought in to gather evidence against the priest in preparation for his inquisition and trial. Based on Aldous Huxley's "The Devils Of Loudon".

This version of Ken Russell's hallucinatory masterpiece restores previously cut footage, including the infamous R*pe Of Christ sequence (believed at one time to be lost) which was removed when the film was originally released. Includes original theatrical trailer.
